Reasons why the great statue of Kannon (Guanyin) in Sendai is my favourite:
- She’s actually 100m tall, 6th largest in the world, but tricks the eye. Is she only a few storeys tall? Is she horizon-striding and infinite? It’s hard to tell.
- Right smack in the middle of town. She ain’t above all the common folk like some other holy statues.
- Her base is actually a dragon and you enter through its mouth. She has an elevator inside and 12 floors filled with many other, smaller statues. You can also stand on her head and look out over the city.
- White colour makes her look bizarre and heavenly, like she’s formed from a cloud.
- She faces the station. If you get lost in Sendai, look which way the bodhisattva is facing and she can tell you how to find the trains.
- Just… good icon best statue A+
